Nathan McDaniel – Student Foundation Scholar

28 Jun

Nathan McDaniel was one of this year’s Student Foundation Scholarship recipients.  Nathan was a member of Student Foundation for three years and served as the Director of Foundations of Excellence.

It would be easy to say that Nathan was an involved student, but that would be an understatement. During his time at Texas State, Nathan served as president of the Texas State Associated Student Government and president of his fraternity Pi Kappa Phi.

Nathan was involved with Stelos Alliance for three years and continually strived to help spread the mission of the organization.  Nathan took part in the inaugural class of the Housley Principled Leadership Program and was a recipient of a Student Foundation Scholarship in 2012.

When asked about his favorite leadership moment, Nathan talks about his experience campaigning for Student Body President.

“The final three months of planning, campaigning, and winning the election for student body president was truly a memorable time,” said Nathan.“Putting together a team, motivating them to work hard, sharing a vision, speaking to numerous students, and finally winning, was a wonderful feeling.”

Nathan graduated in May with a degree in Political Science. He plans to continue his education by attending law school in the near future. Currently, Nathan is interning for Texas representative Donna Campbell.

Nathan is a lifetime member of the Stelos family and a Stelos Megastar.

Ashley Brown – Student Foundation Scholar

19 Jun

Ashley Brown was a dynamic young leader during her time at Texas State. She served as an officer in the Student Organizations Council, on the Student Judicial Hearing Board, and was active in the Texas State NAACP. In Student Foundation, Brown served as Director of Bobcat Pause — a memorial service held for members of the Texas State community who have passed away within the past year.

Ashley was awarded a 2013 Student Foundation Scholarship from Stelos Alliance for her dedication to Student Foundation and was also awarded the Student Foundation Director of the Year award for her work with Bobcat Pause.

“Ashley is very deserving of the recognition she has received,” said Andrew Henley, Executive Vice President of Student Foundation. “She was an exceptional member of Student Foundation and an even better director. She set a new standard for what the organization should expect when it comes to its membership.

Upon receiving her scholarship Ashley had this to say, “It means a lot to me to have received a Stelos scholarship. I felt blessed and very grateful to be a recipient of a Student Foundation scholarship because I hold the organization in such a high regard.”

Ashley has always been a dedicated leader.  One of her proudest moments as a leader was when she was a director for Ebony Players and led the cast through a successful show.

Ashley graduated May 2013 with a Bachelors of Public Administration degree. Ashley will begin the next chapter in her life at Bowling Green State University in Ohio where she will pursue a Master’s degree in Student Affairs.

Andrew Henley – Thomas Dugan Raffen Memorial Scholarship

6 Jun

Andrew Henley has been a member of the Stelos family for some time now – he was selected to participate in the Housley Principled Leadership Program in 2012 where he won a scholarship for his dedication to the program. He has also served a Stelos Fellow for the fall and spring semesters of this year where he manages our social media and scholarship marketing efforts.

This spring at the Stelos Alliance Awards, we were proud to award Andrew with the Thomas Dugan Raffen Memorial Scholarship.

In addition to his involvement with the Stelos Alliance, Andrew has maintained leadership positions on campus where he has developed himself and other student leaders in his capacity as the Executive Vice President of Student Foundation and the Senate Pro-Tempore for the Associated Student Government.

Andrew said this about receiving the Raffen Memorial Scholarship: “Working with Stelos has given me a greater knowledge of who Tommy Raffen was, and I am very touched that I was selected to receive this memorial scholarship. Being recognized for the work I’ve done throughout college is very humbling.”

Andrew has a passion for helping younger students fulfill their potential. He valued his time at Texas State very much and credits Student Foundation as the organization that allowed him to feel at home and accomplish his extra-curricular goals on campus.

After graduation in August, Andrew plans to stay in central Texas and pursue work in the non-profit sector before returning to school to receive his MBA.

For us at Stelos, the most rewarding part of our work is creating relationships with students that last beyond their college career. We know Andrew will continue to support our mission and we look forward to continuing to help him reach his potential.
